We’re BACK!

Time flies when you’re having fun, they say. In that respect, the months seemed to go by quickly this summer, even though the days themselves were long. The paid staff, college age summer staff and volunteers were the smallest this year we’ve ever seen. We loved what we did but really appreciated Mike and Gloria Newsom, who came to cohost for five weeks and Josh and Dianne Simpson who came at the beginning of September. LeRoy had a great time implementing ideas he had to improve the RV park and I even got to be the other part of his “survey crew” when we measured the slope of the RV sites both side to side and back to front. Anyone who has ever camped in a national park or state park knows that you can’t expect level, but some of these really needed help! By the end of the summer, several had been improved and even more should be by next spring when we go back, Lord willing.

The occupants of the RV park sites have changed a lot over the years we’ve been going to Golden Bell. At first, most campers were in tents. They progressed to popup trailers and small camping trailers, then on to 5th wheels and Class C motorhomes. This year the majority, no matter what the class, were BIG! This culminated on Labor Day weekend when every site except the three tent-only sites, was reserved. With only one cancellation, we were really, really full! And it seems that every person represented came in a big four door truck that may or may not have fit in their RV site.

After being wall-to-wall all weekend, Monday was a reprieve as the sites emptied and the season, as far as we were concerned, was over.

While we were still in Colorado, we got a call from granddaughter Bailey, announcing her engagement to Brett Martin! He proposed on the rose window plaza at Friends University, a place that is dear to our hearts. She’s just starting her student teaching, so has a lot on her plate with that plus planning a June 11, 2022 wedding! We are very happy for them and obviously, they are ecstatic!

I mentioned Josh and Dianne Simpson, who took over the RV park when we left. They are unusual among Golden Bell volunteers, in that they are 30-somethings with four kids, ages 6 to 14 I think. They are living full time in their big Freightliner motor home, home schooling the younger kids and taking the older ones to private schools in Colorado Springs. It has been fun to have kids on bikes all through the week. The day before we left, Elaina and Isabelle told us they had something they wanted us to see behind their motor home. This is what we saw! Adventure is everywhere when you live in an RV park!
