And we were worried about leaving Kansas without having bad wind or winter weather! Liberty was one rockin’ pad all day yesterday and through the night. With gusts up to and above 60 mph, it was almost as hard to walk around inside the bus as it is when we’re going down the road. I was just glad we weren’t on the road in that, and I’m sure LeRoy was even more relieved!
The first evening we were in Van Horn, we ate at the Capitan Hotel. We ate there a year ago and enjoyed our meal Sunday just as much. Since Van Horn is just a short distance from the time zone, they claim to have a two hour happy hour at the bar. Just move from one end to the other!
After a day in the bus, we decided to try the Mexican restaurant just across the road from the Oasis RV Park where we were staying. Chuy’s Restaurant has been there for many more years than we have been coming through Van Horn, but we had never noticed it. Unusual, since we’re always up for Mexican food! Their claim to fame is that they are a favorite of John Madden and he has mentioned Chuy’s in many different magazine articles since 1987.
John even has his own table and a chair emblazoned with his name. The #21 dinner, Chicken Picado, is the Madden Special. That was my choice for dinner and it was very good, cubes of grilled chicken with grilled onions and grilled sliced jalapenos.
John’s fear of flying means that he was usually in the Madden Cruiser when he came to visit.
The Oasis RV Park across the street may not be the nicest or newest, but they are a Passport America park, which means we get half priced hookups. They have restroom and laundry facilities, although we’ve never used them, and will soon have a working pool. The owners are very helpful and go out of their way to make us feel welcome. They also have some unique examples of motorized vehicles, all created right there.
Not sure that side car would be very sturdy on an offroad bike, but it’s a good use for a lawn chair!
The wind went down somewhat after rocking us to sleep last night, but was still blowing a consistent 20 mph most of our drive to Truth or Consequences, NM. Thanks to power steering and LeRoy’s strong arms, we had a fairly uneventful drive. We’re settled in at Riverbend Hot Springs and have enjoyed soaking a couple of times already, as well as spending a little time with LeRoy’s cousin Raymond. Now for a good night’s sleep!
