Family visit

Florence Marie’s son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nancy Walter, have escaped the cold and snow of Elkhart, IN and are visiting here in Tucson. Jim arrived Friday but Nancy missed a connection in Chicago and had to wait until Saturday morning to head this way. We picked her up at the airport and then drove on to Tubac to show them one of our favorite tourist spots. Since it was Valentine’s day, we thought we might have trouble getting in to a restaurant for dinner so we picked up pork chops and fixed dinner here at the bus. LeRoy’s experience at the Golden Bell grills last summer stood him in good stead. The meat was very tasty.

Today I had a new experience. In the 5 years we’ve been coming to Tucson, we’ve never taken in the Gem and Mineral show, although we have friends who come from Wichita to check it out every year or so. Nancy makes jewelry and had heard good things about this show and since none of the rest of the assembled family seemed to have any interest, she and I went by ourselves. My goodness, what a lot of things to see! Tucson is known for a variety of gem and mineral exhibits throughout January and February, set up in permanent and temporary venues all over town. This one was in the Convention Center downtown and it seemed to go on forever. We didn’t take time to see the competition displays but there were lots of them. Nancy found several bargains. After searching all through the exhibit hall, she actually made her purchases at the very first booth we had seen! It was definitely fun to shop with her, since I didn’t have much idea of what to look for in the gems and beads.

The weather today is overcast and feels cool to us, but since Elkhart had LOTS of snow yesterday and temperatures around or below zero, Jim and Nancy think it’s pretty nice!
