Family is where you find it

Trying again. Everything I’ve tried to post for awhile is floating in cyberspace. A week ago, I wrote a blog about the “family” we’ve developed on the road: church family with whom we interact, our children and grandchildren who text, call and e-mail, cousins we’ve reconnected with and my sisters who keep in touch by computer and phone. I think one of the things that held me back from wanting to go on this adventure was severing some of those ties or at least putting them at risk, but those fears were groundless. While our relationships are different, they are still strong. Facebook takes on the characteristics of one’s friends, and since most of mine are strong Christian people, I gather strength from them and keep in contact with the community we left behind. We attend a local Friends church here in Tucson and the pastor and his wife, Adam and Allie Kemper, seem almost like our own children, since we’ve known Adam’s family since long before he was born. We helped them move into their first real home a couple of weeks ago and tomorrow we’ll pick up Allie’s mom at the airport and take her to the hospital to meet her first grandchild. Nathan was born just this afternoon! We’ll be delighted to get to see him, since we’re leaving Saturday for a week’s cruise.
Saturday morning we will drive to Phoenix to catch a flight to Houston. Sunday we sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Jamaica. We’ll be the only non-family members cruising with our friends Ron and Carol Young to celebrate their 50th anniversary. We’ve never been on a cruise so another adventure is in our future. We’ll catch up once we get home on the 12th and I should have lots of pictures to share!
